Kwaanza is an African American Holiday that is celebrated 26 December through 1 January. This holiday was created by Maulana Karenga in 1965.
It was designed to give black people a holiday of their own in their image. It is NOT an alternative for Christmas, or a black Christmas.
It is based on Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba)
1. Umoja: Unity
2. Kujichagulia: Self-Determination
3. Ujima: Collective work and Responsibility
4. Ujaama: Cooperative Economics
5. Nia: Purpose
6. Kuumba: Creatvity
7. Imani: Faith
Unlike Christmas, Kwaanza has principles that one can live by year round 365 days of the year.
